Ethics and morals are the principles and ideas of whats right or wrong. Many factors may affect the ethics and morals to a person, such as: religion, special interests and ethical tradition.
On the internet, however, have the words ethic and moral become something many people tries to avoid. There are rules and laws to be followed when you’re online, just like in the real world. Copyright is one of the main factors within “online ethic and moral”.
Throughout the years, many people have found their ways to get around these laws. Napster is a great example of that. Shawn Fanning is the founder of the program Napster, which made it able to share and download files online. The heavy metal band Metallica heard about Napster and discovered that one of their songs(I disappear) had been shared with thousands of people around the globe – even before it had been released! The outcome of this was a struggle between Metallica and the hacker, Shawn Fanning. Loads of Metallica fans threw away their Metallica albums when they heard that Metallica sued the filesharing program, Napster. Metallica drew the longest straw and won in the court.
I think Metallica did the right action. It wasn’t just about Metallica’s music, but moreover every band on the earth. They fought for every band with the copyright law by their side. Something is got to change to stop the filesharing programs. Even though I don’t want to pay for music and other media, I do feel the artists and bands problems these days. It’s very hard to make money out of music when people downloads your work instead of buying it. The result of this filesharing popularity, ends in a breakup of a band. And then again, people can’t understand why their favourite band broke up! Kind of silly in my opinion. The prices for music, dvd and other media needs a huge change. If the prices were lower, and the rules had been followed up, I think it would been the best for both the people and for the artists/bands. Sometimes we do need to meet on the half-way…
